Archaeodiscovery Dig School

Archaeology at Hale Farm

Hale Farm dates back to the medieval period, with a fifteenth century timber-framed farmhouse and lots of evidence of ancient iron working in the area. So, we have teamed up with Archaeodiscovery and begun a community excavation to unlock thousands of years of our farm’s history!

A friendly team of professional archaeologists have been on hand to support our campers experience a real-life dig and hunt for a long-lost lime kiln that appears on some old maps of the farm.

Last season we recovered finds from many periods including Victorian crockery, eighteenth century clay pipes, prehistoric flints and lime waste from the nearby, but yet still undiscovered, kiln. Investigations are ongoing and a new season of digging will begin next summer.

So, grab a trowel, jump in the trench and help us unearth the mysteries of our Sussex farmstead. Everyone is welcome regardless of experience and all training will be provided by the site lead archaeologist. You’ll learn how to dig; metal detect and identify ancient artefacts. All dig sessions are 2 hours long and cost £20 per person. Spaces on the dig are limited and priority will be given to those who will be staying with us in either onsite camping or staying in one of our Luxury Bell Tents, Shepherd’s Hut or Barns

All Archaeodiscovery staff are qualified archaeologists who hold enhanced DBS certificates and have regular safeguarding training. They will also be running Dig Schools at Hale Farm in the Easter and Summer holidays, so that whatever your age you can become an archaeologist for the day at our beautiful and historic site.
